Right off the bat, we are not going to lie to you. Search engine optimisation is complicated. It requires vast amounts of effort on your part. Much of this effort will be down to trial and error. What may work for one site may not necessarily work for another site, even if the content is very much the same. That being said, there are a few simple tricks which will help to boost the search engine position of most websites. That is what we are going to discuss here. Even with the most basic of SEO knowledge, you should be able to put these tips into practice.

Sign up for Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools

These are, of course, two very different tools. They work well in tangent with one another though, each feeding you different information which will be useful in your quest for the top spots on that ranking page:

  • Google analytics: This is a remarkably complicated tool, mostly designed for those who really wish to go into depth on marketing. However, it is still going to be useful if you are using it for SEO purposes, you just will not use every tool. You will be able to use Google Analytics to check which keywords people are searching for to land on your website. You will even be able to check which pages the visitor is heading to after they have landed on your website. This information, amongst other pieces, will allow you to spruce up your landing pages for higher conversions. It will also allow you to really focus on the keywords that are drawing visitors to your site and take resources away from those which are having little to no impact.
  • Google Webmaster Tools: This tool has primarily been designed for search engine optimisation. It will highlight any crawl errors on your site (important as crawl errors can have an impact on ratings), it will highlight 404 errors, the speed of your site, and whether your website is compatible with mobile. All useful information, all things that need to be dealt with.

Content, Content, and more Content

Honestly, it is content which gets you rankings in the search engines. Good quality content is the key to a successful website. However, do not fall into the same trap that many other people do when they create their content. We have run into so many people who think that poor quality content is going to blast them to the top of the search engines, mainly if they pepper it with tons of keywords. This may work for the less-competitive keywords. You may get visitors. However, you can bet your bottom dollar that most of those visitors will not buy anything from you. Your content is poor, why should they trust you?

It is really worth taking the time to focus on high-quality content and try not to cover as many keywords. You will get fewer people on your website, but your conversion rate is going to be a whole lot higher.

Remember, good quality content also tends to get shared via social media and by people linking to you. Bad quality content is not. Good quality content will, therefore, get you more links back to your website which will, in turn, boost your position in the search engines.

It is probably worth paying a little extra for good quality content. It will pay itself off in the long run.

Google Authorship

Google Authorship is simple. It will just add a small picture next to your search result. This will draw more eyes to it which will, in turn, lead to more clicks, even if you land a little bit down the page. We have seen signs that use Google Authorship receive more clicks in third place than a site which does not use it in first place!

Meta Tags

Your meta tags can make or break your site. If you do not know how to do them properly, get in touch with an SEO specialist. Meta tags will, essentially, tell the search engines what your website is all about. It is this text which will appear in the search results. You, therefore, want to make them as eye-catching as possible, whilst at the same time highly-descriptive with your keywords incorporated. If you are using WordPress to run your website, you will find a number of plugins which will allow you to add Meta tags to your site quickly and easily.
